If you think about your life and your day to day dealings with work, friends, family, fitness and everything else that fills our mind and time, everything is driven by wants and needs. We need to pay bills and thus make money. We want the freshest gear, or the newest book or coolest tunes for our workouts and ride-arounds. We need to positively and constructively interact with loved ones, friends and acquaintances like co-workers, members of our gym, employees of businesses we shop at and so on. We need to take care of ourselves and health by way of intelligent decisions concerning our nutrition, physical activity and sleep patterns. What we want and need to do can vary obviously. Priorities and ultimately actions are completely individually based. As a husband, son, coach and athlete, I’m constantly juggling my personal needs and wants to keep progressing towards my goals across all of my domains. That circus act of making a bunch of pots on the fire boil simultaneously can and will be discussed in a future blog and event for sure. For now, lets focus on the driving force behind it all, and what everyone NEEDS to start with: Our Goals!
I am of the firm belief that the more detailed and all encompassing we can make our goals in regards to ALL areas of our lives, the more actionable we can be in attacking and progressing with positive momentum. Because that is what it all comes down to with setting goals and achieving them over and over again. It doesn’t get much simpler than the three steps below for approaching and pursuing goals.
- Set the Mark – Be honest about what you want exactly
- Make a Plan – Time-tabled out progressively, leave nothing to chance
- “Eat the Elephant” – You can’t eat an elephant in one bite. Approach goals with systematic and daily manageable tasks or objectives, and watch the goals crumble in the palm of your determination, will and passion.
When push comes to shove, your goals are yours. If you focus solely on the end goal though, things can become daunting really quick and discouraging, which is not POSITIVE MOMENTUM. To keep the wheels spinning, we have to set the small “breadcrumb” type objectives and checkpoints to keep our heads down and keep chopping every single day to eventually attain and achieve what we never thought we could. The new job, the bigger pay-day, the best qualification, the highest rank in the open yet, and on and on are all possible with a little introspection and soul-searching to start, and seen through with a little gumption, flexibility and “work-boot” mentality when its time to actually get down to business.
Imagine and settle on what you want. Devise the plan with actionable steps and objectives for along the way. Keep the momentum positive. Be relentless.
